Character Analysis: Princess Zelda

Hooray! My first character analysis. In this post I'm going to take a deeper look at my chosen character, the role they play, as well as their outfit throughout the game/ movie/ series, and today I have chosen Princess Zelda.

Princess Zelda is the fictional character who appears in The Legend Of Zelda series. Princess Zelda has made an appearance in 15 of the games, with her first appearance in 1987.

Princess Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Zelda is usually portrayed as a young woman with blonde hair, although, she was seen with brown hair in Twilight Princess, and brown, being the most common hair color for Zelda in Super Smash Bros. Zelda is also seen with a tapestry, which usually sits on the front of her floor length gown. The majority of Zelda's feature pauldrons, with a similar design.

Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Princess Zelda: Twilight Princess
Here, Zelda is seen with brown hair that is parted down the center. Two pieces of hair are pulled to the front and wrapped with a piece of string. The rest of the hair is pulled behind in a large plait.

Her gown is floor length and white. As she walks it moves with her, but doesn't blow around in the wind. From that we can see that is a heavy material, but doesn't shine. He skirt is also full, as it doesn't fall straight down, but sort of splays outwards. The skirt has a brown ring along the bottom, with a harp design above the ring. The design is repeated along the bottom of the gown. Zelda has a purple doublet, which splits open at the front and comes to a point at the back. Hylian writing is embroidered along the edge of the doublet. As for the armor, she wears gold pauldrons, with a chest piece, She also wears a crown, with a leaf design. Both the crown, pauldrons and belt feature jewels.

Costume pieces:
  • Crown, pauldrons, belt
  • Dress
  • Doublet
  • Gloves
  • Tapestry
Princess Zelda: Spirit Tracks

The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

This design shows are more feminine side of Zelda, with her blonde hair, pink dress, jewelry and makeup. Zelda's hair has no part, and is not gathered at any point. She has a side fringe, with two shorter pieces of hair pulled to her front.

Her gown, like all the other Zelda's is floor length. It's a light pink color, with the bodice being a darker pink. Unlike Twilight Princess Zelda, this Zelda does not have pauldrons, but does have the chest piece, which, in this case, is keeping her small cape on. She does however, like many other Zelda's, wears a decorative belt, which hold the tapestry in place.

Her gown features a jagged strip about a third down her skirt in the same blue color that is on the tapestry.

Zelda's outfit is completed with a large pink ball necklace, crown with a pink jewel, gloves, and winged earrings.

Costume Pieces:
  • Gloves
  • Belt, chestpiece, necklace, crown
  • Gown
  • Cape
  • Tapestry

The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Princess Zelda: Skyward Sword

This Zelda, in my opinion, is the sweetest of the Zeldas, and she has the outfit to show it. Her hair is a light blonde with a fringe. Like most Zeldas, she has two pieces of hair brought to the front, and wrapped in ribbon.

Her dress goes below the knee and is a dark pink color. This Zelda, does not wear pauldrons, but does have many decorative items. Like Spirit tacks Zelda, this Zelda wears a cape, but does not have a chest piece to hold it in place, so it is tied behind her like a shawl. Zelda wears a tapestry tied under her belt. A gold circle belt lays across that. Zelda wear brown knee high boots.

Costume Pieces:

  •  Dress
  • Gold Belt
  • Leather Belt
  • Shawl
  • Tapestry
  • Boots

The Legend Of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors

Princess Zelda: Hyrule Warriors
This Zelda is probably my favorite out of all the Zeldas, this, and Twilight Princess Zelda. For once, Zelda is actually out there on her own, fighting alongside Link, and she has the outfit to go along with that lifestyle.

Instead of a gown, she has more of an open front skirt. The skirt sits stiffly on its own, and splays outwards. She wears a pink corset, and heavy chest armor and pauldrons. She also has metal gauntlets, and armored boots. Like many other Zeldas, she wears the tapestry, similar to that of Twilight Princess Zelda's.

Costume Pieces:
  • Skirt
  • Corset
  • Crown
  • Armor

Note: I know I did not include every Zelda, but I picked the ones that are more commonly known. Also note that Spirit Tacks Zelda is the same as Minish Cap, and Phantom Hourglass Zelda.

Cosplay

Hi All!

Welcome to my blog, it's only small at the moment, but I can assure you, I can see it getting somewhere. My blog is all about cosplay. What is cosplay? you ask, well, for those who don't know, I will explain further on. As for those who do, I hope you can sit back as you read my blog, and enjoy my cosplays and tutorials.

What is cosplay?

Cosplay, or "costume play"is an art where participants wear costumes and accessories to portray a specific character, typically from Anime, or video games, but can include book characters, and movie characters. Cosplay also extends into "costume role play", where participants can dress up and act as their selected character. It is common to also see genderbent character, with the most common genderbent characters being movie characters.

The growth of cosplaying has grown rapidly since the 90s, so much so, that there are dedicated cosplay conventions, or dedicated cosplay competitions at games conventions.
The most common cosplay event is the San Diego Comic Con, as well as the New York Comic Con, and the anime specific Anime North.

How do I get started?

The first thing you need after you've decided on your character, is a costume. Many costumes can be bought ready made online, as well as sold directly from conventions. Some companies and small businesses will also do commissions, where you can order custom made costumes, although these are more expensive than ready made, they tend to be better quality, and a better fit.

The final option for getting a costume is to make one yourself. In my opinion, this is the best way to obtain a costume, as as well as a wearable item, you also get experience to go along with it. You also have the option to personalize your outfit when you make it yourself.

The final step in getting started is looking around your area for local conventions to attend. With time, your skills will improve, and you will discover better ways to make things. Remember that cosplay is supposed to be fun, and every costume is unique. Also every costume is fantastic, the kid who spent all night making a cardboard costume is just as good as the guy who spent a year making his costume.
